Top Tips for a Carefree Engagement Session
So you've booked your engagement session and you're excited as heck! Or maybe you are still deciding if you should book one and you're a little nervous. There are a lot of reasons to take engagement photos. It helps you get to know your photographer (me!) and see how I work.
I can also get to know y'all as a couple and see how you connect. Some couples are quiet and others are energetic. A lot of people aren't comfortable in front of a camera, so this will give you practice for your wedding day.
YOUR OUTFITS ARE KEY
Make sure you are comfortable over anything! If you are uncomfortable, it will show in your photos. Coordinate your colors, don't match. Try dressing in the same color family, not the exact same color. If you like prints, wear them, just try to make sure the colors won't fight with the background.
You are investing in the session, invest in a new outfit too. Have a fun shopping day to find a new look(s) for your photos. Make sure that your outfit matches the weather. You don't want to be too cold or hot.
CHOOSE A LOCATION THAT REFLECTS YOU
Think of a place that means something to both of you. Whether the place is gorgeous or popular or simple, the photos will mean more to you if the location does too.
Here are some ideas:
- a park y'all spend time in
- favorite coffee shop
- lifestyle/in your home
- downtown
- farmers market
- a picnic
- ice cream parlor
LIGHTING IS EVERYTHING
There are certain times of day that will give you warm, glowy photos. The middle of the day might be better for your schedule, but not for dreamy photographs. The lighting will be harsher than sunrise or sunset.
DON’T BE HARD ON YOURSELF
It can be easy to feel like everything needs to be perfect. The best thing you can do is be yourself.
BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING
Don't bring a suitcase full of things, but bring items you may need to make the session better.
Here are some items to pack in a small bag:
- water
- gum
- small makeup kit
- props for your session
- hair kit (bobby pins, hairspray, rubber bands, etc.)
- snacks
- extra clothes and shoes
- towel for dabbing sweat
- an umbrella
I hope these 5 things helped you prepare for your session! For more tips, read my other blog posts or follow me on Instagram.
